Howling Comique: Ludus (1982)
What I love about this…this…well, can you call this a song? There is no melody. There is no key. There are no lyrics. The rhythm is irregular. The horn honks out random notes. And yet, there is a sense of composition. “Howling Comique” challenges what we allow ourselves to call music. It is vague and visceral, playful, and maybe even a little scary in the way a fun house can be scary. A decidedly human sound. And if that isn’t music, then what is?
