    Week of Waller: Day Four

    Too Tired (1940)

I’ve got a soft spot for songs about being tired, but let’s be honest – this song is really stupid. Too tired to make a little candy? I think fudge is dandy? C’mon, man. Did a third grader write these lyrics? Still, Waller’s instincts are right on. It’s rare to hear him sing so soft. Even his tomfoolery is gentle and sleepy. The band can barely stay awake. The piano solo, perhaps his lightest and roomiest, seems to drift off into a dream. Oh, that Waller, he’s a charmer! When it’s all said and done, Fats manages to walk away from a train wreck of a song unscathed. Impressive!
